Artist’s Statement

I would characterize this work as sculpture using the ceramic vessel as subject matter. Considering pottery’s inherent association with physical contact, these works are intimate in scale and have inviting sensual surfaces.

Some pieces lean towards the grotesque — as ancient visions of distorted figures of shamans or spiritual intermediaries — but I feel they all have a predominantly benevolent “resident presence.”

I want each to be referentially ambiguous, atemporal, and pan-cultural. As Edwin Wade stated in “The Eloquent Object,” my goal is to “invoke spiritual contemplation through material acknowledgement of our shared humanity.”
